Genndy Tartakovsky Blasts Back Onscreen with Sym-Bionic Titan

“Sym-Bionic Titan” premiered September 17th on Cartoon Network with a bang. Reminding us of his previous projects, such as “Samurai Jack” and “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”, Titan continue Tartakovsky’s fondness for sweeping views, dynamic shots, and fast paced action. Titan follows two Galalunans, Princess Illana and her bodyguard Lance, as they seek refuge on Earth after their homeworld is taken over by the barbaric Mutraddi led by the traitor General Modula. Accompanied by their robot Octus, voiced by Brian Posehn, Illana and Lance attempt to blend into high school to evade capture and detection by the Mutraddi, the American government and a secret organization dedicated to protecting the Earth from aliens. The title derives from the robot battlesuits that both Illana and Lance wear to defend themselves. When combined with Octus, the three create the Sym-Bionic Titan capable of greater feats of combat. Similar to the Power Ranger formula of fights escalating to the point of needing Zords then combining the Zords to create Megazord. A geeky example if there ever was one but it works.

Following a similar fashion as his earlier works, Tartakovsky makes his show to entertain a younger audience but recognizes that adults enjoy cartoons as well and gives the show a darker edge that older audiences will appreciate. Tartakovsky describes the show as “an exciting hybrid of high school drama and giant robot battles.” Once again it seems that Tartakovsky has created another animation hit. “Sym-Bionic Titan” airs every Friday at 8pm E/P.
